ROSEMARY SPICE

Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as Rosemary, is a woody perennial herb with fragrant evergreen needle like leaves with flowers of different colors, native to Mediterranean region. It's a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae along with many other herbs such as oregano, thyme, basil and lavender. The herb has been hailed since ancient times for its medicinal properties: help alleviate muscle pain, improve memory, boost immune and circulatory system and promote hair growth. Till date its leaves, fresh or dried are used in traditional cuisine and have a characteristic aroma which complements many cooked foods. It provides calories and contain no cholesterol. Minerals such as potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and manganese can be found in Rosemary. Research shows it has a rich source of antioxidants and anti inflammatory compounds, improves digestion, enhances memory and concentration, preventing brain aging and provides neurological protection. It is typically prepared as a dried whole herb or a dried powdered extract, which teas and liquid extract are made from fresh or dried leaves. It used as a culinary condiment to make body perfumes too.  As a spice it is taken in small doses, as high doses is believed to trigger vomiting, spasms, coma, pulmonary oedema (fluid in lungs)  and at times miscarriages.
