Caffeine consumption does not appear to be associated with its development but excessive alcohol consumption (binge drinking) us linked to atrial fibrillation.

Story of Felix

I am 38, male, never really bothered to check my cholesterol. About 4 months ago, I had an annual physical checkup  as part of my organization's requirements and my cholesterol was high. I was shocked. I am not a smoker and I exercise religiously and I am generally healthy. My blood pressure was perfect just as everything else. The doctor prescribed some medications and I said "no way". I wanted to give it another two months and see how I could improve on it without medications. So I stopped eating things like potato chips and added oat bran to my diet. I jogged three times more than before. Six weeks later, I went in for another test, surprisingly, all figures shot up. I was dumbfounded. How possible?? Okay, so I decided to try a five more week of a healthy lifestyle before giving in to medication. I  bought eight books on cholesterol and followed their dietary requirements religiously. My thrill was eating the dark chocolate and red wine they all recommended. After fi...

UPPER BODY STRENGTH

Upper body strength is important to have because it controls your ability to perform everyday activities such as reaching, pulling, pushing and lifting. Having a strong upper body improves your flexibility, mobility and range of motion. If your upper body strength deteriorates as you age, you are more prone to injuries, diseases and a diminished quality of life. Your upper body is grouped into muscles with specific functions. You have muscles of your hand, forearms, upper arm and shoulder. You also have muscles that connect your limbs to your chest, torso and spinal column. Maintaining strength in these muscles enables you to perform everyday and sports related activities at an optimal level and to minimize the muscle loss that comes with aging. Upper body muscle strength can also help prevent injuries with activities that stress those muscles. Benefits of strength in these muscles are a pleasing, healthy appearance and strong posture.

REMINDER

From a nurse... “As a registered nurse, I’d often see in my patients (and in myself!) the complications caused by being overweight and obese, but I have to say when I saw this I was amazed at the visual reminder. “ “This image shows a 250 lb woman on the left and a 120 lb woman on the right. We can see weight gain from the outside, but we usually can’t see what it’s doing on the inside. Look at the fat surrounding the organs in the woman on the left. Do you also see the fat around her heart and around her brain? A little scary, isn’t it? Look at the compression around the stomach and internal organs. Do you think that would have any impact on GERD and indigestion? Look at the compressed knee joints. Do you think those joints ache a little more than they should?” WOW!!  That’s eye opening!  I see patients every day that are dying from diseases caused or worsened by poor choices and obesity.  Is that cheeseburger, chocolate cake, French fries, etc...worth it? Make a d...

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLOTHING FOR EXERCISES

Depending on your own body image and personal style you may prefer a workout clothing that is loose and cover most part of your body. Or, you might want to wear fitted outfits that allows you to see your muscles and curves as you exercise. If you are running or walking don't wear long pants as that might cause you to trip or get stuck in pedals. While function and fit are the most important elements, you want to feel good while you are exercising, otherwise you might be tempted to cut your workout short. Runners, tennis players and trainers will want to choose a workout shoe that protects their bodies and boosts performance. Make sure you wear a comfortable athletic footwear that supports your feet and ankles. Don't wear jewelry when you exercise. Anything dangling from your ears or neck runs a risk of snuggling a piece of equipment or falling off. As much as you will want to look good while exercising, your workout clothes should be less fashionable and more about comfort a...

Tony has done well with getting his cholesterol under control. He's had a notable failure. But as Tony tells it, he's learnt as much from the failure as he's learnt from the success. Maybe more. About 2 years ago, Tony's doctor told him he had a high risk of heart attack and his cholesterol was high. This meant that Tony, at age 52, had to start cholesterol medicine right away.  "It was the fear that did it", admits Tony. "I am about the age my dad was when he had his first heart attack. I was willing to do whatever the doctor told me. So I did it all -  the healthy diet, exercise and cholesterol medication. It was a lot of work to get used to my new lifestyle. But my cholesterol went down and my risk for heart attack went down too. After 6 months I was fit, I'd lost weight and felt great. I was golden". After a year or so of keeping up wif his healthy heart routine, he decided to make a change." I figured I was ready to stop taking the me...

SMOOTHIES

While others may eat just fruits and vegetables as a snack or dessert others prefer smoothies. A smoothie is a thick beverage made from a blended raw fruit and or vegetable with other ingredients such as water, ice, dairy products or sweeteners. Being hypertensive or diabetic should not stop you from enjoying smoothies too. One out of many which you can enjoy is the Carrot and Orange Burst smoothie. This combination of carrot juice blended with oranges or any other citrus fruit will give you a huge burst of potassium, vitamin C and vitamin A. Just peel an orange or tangerine and blend with carrots for a super treat. Potassium counteracts the effects of sodium on blood pressure thereby lowering it. It also decreases the risk of developing kidney stones and bone loss that occurs with age. Enjoy smoothies as long as the ingredients are blood pressure lowering agents.

SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION

Although the inability to have and maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction) becomes increasingly common in men as they reach age 50, it's even more likely to occur if they have high blood pressure. Over time high blood pressure damages the lining of your blood vessels and causes your arteries to harden and narrow (atherosclerosis ) limiting blood flow. This means less blood is able to flow to your penis. For some men the decreased blood flow makes it difficult to achieve and maintain erections.  The problem is fairly common, especially among men who are not treating their high blood pressure. Monitor and know your blood pressure readings today.

"I was self-conscious. I was insecure. I was lazy. I had suicidal thoughts at times. I was overweight. I had high blood pressure. I would be breathless when I went up a stairs. My feet would swell on long journeys.  I never had rest periods from work. One day I made a promise to myself to take control of my thoughts, my health and my life. I started eating healthily, taking rest periods, monitoring my pressure and working out. Now I am unstoppable. If I could do it so can you.

DATE FRUIT

Phoenix dactylifera(date or date palm) is a flowering plant species in the palm family Arecaceae, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Although its place of origin is unknown because of long cultivation, it probably originated from lands around Iraq.  Though it can be eaten fresh dates are often dried resembling raisins and plums. But whether fresh or dry, the health benefits are just as plentiful. If you are looking for fibre, copper, potassium, manganese, magnesium, vitamin B6, look no further than dates. But the fruit is so small that you will need to consume a larger quantity to intake the necessary amount. It also has a high sugar content about 66.5 grams per 100 gram serving of the fruit. Dates are useful for weight loss, promoting heart health, iron deficiency anemia, reducing high blood pressure, promoting respiration and digestive health, preventing hemorrhoids and impotence. An old farmer wrote a letter to his son in prison." Son this year I will not plant cassava and yam because I can't dig the field, I know if you were here you would have helped me".  The son replied  his father "Dad don't even think of digging the field because that's where I burried  the money I stole".               "GHANA  POLICE" on reading this letter went early in the morning to the house, dug the whole field in search of the money but nothing was found.  The next day the son wrote his father again "Dad you can now plant your cassava and yam this is the best I can do from here.           Dad replied " haaa my son you are too powerful indeed ,even in prison you still command police men to work for me,I was so suprised to see the IGP and team holding hoes  and shovels, digging my farm. LIVING LIFE UNDER PRESSURE

Sitting in the stands at a football game is enough to make your blood pressure skyrocket, between the stress of victory and the alcohol available at concession stands. Now imagine what playing or coaching in the same pitch can do. For Mr. A. Donkor, head coach of a private university, a high blood pressure diagnosis from his family doctor at age 27 was enough to make him rethink his health. As a sports man physical activity and unhealthy eating was not the culprit. Instead his high blood pressure was attributed to uncontrollable risk factors, including family history. His grandmum, sister and oldest son all had blood pressure. At age 40, he has successfully managed his pressure for the last 13 yrs, keeping it in a healthy range with the use of medications, ample rest periods, avoiding smoking and alcoholism and annual visits to his health care team. He now carries out hypertensive talks for his team and encourages them to check their pressure periodically. His son has also learnt enou...
