Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries.Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood to your heart and other parts of the body. The plaque is a composition of fats, cholesterol, calcium and other waste substances in the blood. These substances gradually fill up the lumen of the artery making it narrow. It may start with a damage or injury to to the inner layer of your artery. You usually won't have any signs and symptoms at the onset, until the lumen is completely narrowed. Hence preventing free flow of blood through the artery to the heart, brain and other parts of the body. This will then increase the pressure of the blood in the artery and can lead to stroke and heart failure.Atherosclerosis can be prevented and treated. The best prevention is to reduce your fats and cholestrol intake.
