TESTIMONY

Ellen writes.. I am a known hypertensive for years now. I do well not to skip my medication despite my busy schedules at home as a house wife. I exercise two to three times a week by simply taking a scroll with my husband. During our walks we talk about almost everything just as we used to when we were dating. I always almost feel like a teenager with the things he says and does. This has helped me to rule out emotional stress that affected my blood pressure. I feel so much better now with my husband's most cheapest treatment (laughter) he gives to me. Things we do for love. Things we do for hypertension.

KIDNEY FAILURE

High blood pressure is one of the most common cause of kidney failure. That is because it can damage both the large arteries leading to your kidney and the tiny blood vessels (glomeruli) within the kidneys. Damage to either, means your kidneys cannot effectively filter waste from your blood. As a result, dangerous levels of fluid and waste accumulate in your body. You might ultimately require dialysis or kidney transplantation to remove these waste substances in your body.

KNOW YOURSELF

This is Sandra, 27 years of age. Sandra checks her blood pressure once every month because she is  not at risk of hypertension by heredity. Her readings are mostly between 100 /70- 110/80 mmHg. Anytime she records a reading higher than that range she knows all she needs is  to rest to bring her pressure down. Check your blood pressure often and know their interpretations.  Be smart.

Kontonmire

I can be found anywhere in the backyard local households as well as farms. I have large green leaves and appreciated most when I am used in stews or soups in the African kitchen. Like other leafy greens I am low in calories and high in dietary fiber. I contain vitamins, minerals and I am rich in folic acid. Because of my low fat content I reduce the risk of cancer and heart diseases. I am good for persons with type 2 diabetes because of my high magnesium and low glycemic index. Most people find it difficult in getting my English name as such my local name has prevailed in most educational books till date. Some people have given me English names like Taro leaves or African Spinach.  Any other you have also heard me being called? Let us all know and learn.

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION

Abnormal heart rhythm characterized by rapid and irregular beating. Often it starts as brief periods of abnormal beating which become longer and possibly constant over time. Most episodes have no symptoms. Occasionally there may be heart palpitations, fainting, shortness of breath or chest pain. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of heart failure, dementia and stroke. Hypertension and obesity are common risk factors for atrial fibrillation. Caffeine consumption does not appear to be associated with its development but excessive alcohol consumption (binge drinking) us linked to atrial fibrillation.
